AEC Southall Drawing Office Staff - c.1962 Draughtsman John Stevens working on the 'Production Side' of the Main (or Chief Engineer's) Drawing Office. Within five years John, with his wife Betty and very young daughters, left Buckinghamshire for Canada in order to train for and obtain a commercial pilot's licence. Following this and studies at a Bible College in Canada, the family moved to South Africa where John and Betty became missionaries attached to a Christian hospital in Ubombo, Zululand. John was pilot with an air ambulance service, whilst Betty helped and taught at hospital clinics, besides being John's all-important ground-control in that remote mountain area. In order to continue these services, they soon had to form and run their own operation, the Zululand Mission Air Transport ( ZUMAT ). Their five daughters are now scattered around the globe, whilst John and Betty look forward to retiring from this difficult work in 2003. They would love to hear from any of their former AEC friends. Eric Hayles, Webmaster, can put you in touch.
