AEC Southall Drawing Office Staff - 1962 Draughtsman Eric Hayles working on the 'Production Side' of the Main (or Chief Engineer's) Drawing Office. He says: At this time I was working on a new format for referencing and specifying AEC's huge number of ball and roller bearings. Proprietary bearings were allocated Stock List numbers from Stock List books maintained by the Drawing Office. Different Stock List series were allocated for different bearing types, with individual Stock List numbers being allocated according to a bearing's size, diametral clearance (or 'fit'), etc. Approved suppliers Part Numbers and a bearing's Fit were noted against each AEC Stock List Number. Over the years, some duplication of part numbers for identical bearings had occurred. It was also sometimes difficult to determine the exact specification intended for an older Stock List entry, so that a draughtsman might think it quicker and safer to allocate a new number for a bearing he wished to specify, rather than search out an existing Stock List number. The work shown being done here was to clarify the specifications for all Stock Listed bearings and to prepare charts for easy future reference, so that poor definition and duplication of part numbers for bearings was eliminated. However, before this job was completed, I was diverted to more pressing work, never to return to finalise this job. So despite the months already spent on them, and they being so near completion, the prepared revisions and charts were never officially issued. Draughtsmen were disappointed when jobs on which they had spent days, weeks, or even months, were suddenly abandoned because of a change of policy, priorities, or because of a lost or cancelled Sales Order, but it was not unusual.
