Farewell to the AEC Main Drawing Office - Dec 1973 Eric says: Several things conspired to cause me to leave AEC after almost 25 years there. Money was one, for although I felt that my salary was reasonable, it was not proving adequate for a family of six. Just maintaining a standard of living was getting harder, whereas, on reaching the big four-o, I expected it should have been getting easier. Another concern was the changing character of the work and atmosphere within the D.O.. Working on the Engine Design Section at that time, it was clear that British Leyland were now succeeding in calling the tune. I was not alone in sensing that some of our top management were spending more of their time in Preston, where their future prospects now lay, than at Southall. Controversial directives from Leyland seemed to arrive unchallenged; maybe it was now just easier to pass on a directive than to really question it. After all, it is always easier and safer to pass on another's policy, than to formulate your own. Whatever the truth, I realised that the next twenty five years at AEC could never be so satisfying as the last. So for these and other reasons, I decided it was time to move on. I received this farewell card from office colleagues. Its inner pages can be seen by clicking on the link below the image. |
